Learn the Stingray Shuffle! The stingrays have had a massive season this year on the San Diego Coastline and especially in the waters of the Torrey Pines State Reserve in La Jolla, California. Learn how to protect yourself!
As beautiful as the water looks and feels, it can be dangerous, besides the rip tides, stingrays are your biggest worry. There are sharks in the water, and they are often seen off this stretch of beach, but it’s very unlikely that you will ever interface with one of them while swimming. The stingrays are a much more likely danger, and they have been more prevalent than I have ever seen this year all along the coast, but especially here. It’s critical to know how to avoid them, and how to spot them, in order to enjoy the water safely. Getting stung or even grazed by a stingray’s stinger is incredible painful, requires medical attention, can make you sick for over 2 weeks afterwards, and worst of all, will make the walk back up the cliff unbearably agonizing.
Believe me and pretty much everyone who goes to the beach regularly in San Diego, you want to do everything in your power to avoid being stung by a stingray. First and foremost, learn and practice the stingray shuffle. Shuffle your feet along the bottom of the sand in the water until you’re about mid-thigh deep. The vibrations that you’re creating let the stingray know you’re there so they can avoid you.
Secondly, don’t linger at the water’s edge, this is where the stingrays like to swim and hunt for food, especially when the beach is very flat, that makes it easy for them to swim around. They’re most prevalent when the tide is coming in from low to high because they like to feed on the little minnows and baby fish that are swept up in the tide. So when you go in, don’t just step in up to your ankles and stay there, shuffle your way until you’re mid-thigh or waist deep into the water before you start enjoying yourself. Most of the time, the water is very clear here, so you can actually see the stingrays, so look down as you’re shuffling your way in and out of the water. Luckily this trip I’ve bathed in the saltwater every day and wasn’t swept away by a riptide or stung by a stingray YAY!
It’s been an incredible day on the coast here in Torrey Pines and La Jolla, and I’m so glad that we were able to explore my favorite beach together.
