Torrey Pines – La Jolla, California – San Diego Pacific Ocean Beach Adventure

Early Spanish explorers named the grove of trees in the area Punto de Los Arboles, or “Point of Trees.” The trees served as a landmark for sailors navigating off the legendarily foggy and treacherous California coast. Today the 2000 acre Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve and State Beach is a majestic oceanfront wilderness surrounded by the dense urban environment of coastal San Diego county.

Botanist Charles C. Parry identified this pine as a unique species and named it after his friend John Torrey, a leading botanist of that time. Now the Torrey Pines State Reserve is home to the rarest pine tree species: Pinus Torreyana, growing only here, and on Santa Rosa Island off the coast of Santa barbara. The Torrey Pines ended up saving this area from development, and in 1899 the City of San Diego set aside the initial 369 acres for a public park.

American Journalist, Philanthropist, and the founding donor for many manor institutions in the Southern California, Ellen Browning Scripps purchased land slated for development and completed the boundaries of the reserve you see today. She was a forward thinking visionary, and staunch crusader for the improvement of not just people, but of land, and nature.

When she saw the effects of overuse of the park on the Torrey Pines she cultivated the public’s interest in caring for the trees. Over the course of her life she contributed greatly to the establishment of the reserve and countless institutions including Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Bishop’s School, Scripps College, San Diego Natural History Museum, Scripps Health, Scripps Research, and The Children’s Pool in la Jolla. A remarkably philanthropic, benevolent, generous, and most of all forward thinking woman who still shapes this place as much today as ever.

Before this area was colonized by Spain, the Kumeyaay tribes migrated lived here, and migrated between here, the deserts, and the mountains throughout the seasons. The land was bountiful, and the Kumeyaay would have fished, hunted, collected crustaceans, and gathered seeds, fruit, roots, to create probably a very healthy and tasty diet. The Kumeyaay have left an indelible archaeological and cultural legacy here in San Diego county and they continue to be a strong tribal nation today both here and south of the border in Baja Norte state.

The water is usually so clean and clear here, and because of the lack of shoreline development, and the underwater marine reserve, this constantly ranks as one of the 3 cleanest beaches in SoCal. This is a wonderful rare instance of extremely valuable real estate, both being a wildlife refuge and habitat, and a beautiful escape from civilization for people to enjoy for the most part in harmony.

It’s been an incredible day on the coast here in Torrey Pines and La Jolla, and I’m so glad that we were able to explore my favorite beach together.
